Propecia is the original branded version of finasteride 1mg, a once-daily tablet for male pattern hair loss. It contains exactly the same active ingredient, at the same strength, as generic Finasteride — it works by blocking the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone mainly responsible for shrinking scalp hair follicles.

It's for men only. Improvement is gradual — most men need at least 3-6 months of daily treatment before seeing a difference, and any benefit is generally lost within months of stopping.

  • Take one 1mg tablet by mouth once a day
  • Swallow whole with water, with or without food
  • Take it at roughly the same time each day to build the habit
  • Do not stop and start treatment — consistent daily use gives the best results

Women and children should not handle broken or crushed tablets, as finasteride can be absorbed through the skin and may harm an unborn baby.

Most men don't experience problems, but a small number notice effects related to hormone levels.

  • Reduced sex drive (libido)
  • Difficulty getting or maintaining an erection
  • A decrease in the amount of semen released during sex
  • Rarely, breast tenderness or enlargement
  • Rarely, low mood

These usually resolve after stopping treatment. Contact your prescriber if any side effect is troublesome or doesn't go away, or if you notice any lumps, pain or discharge from the breast area.

  • Finasteride 1mg
  • Lactose monohydrate
  • Pregelatinised starch
  • Sodium starch glycolate
  • Microcrystalline cellulose
  • Magnesium stearate
  • Film coat (hypromellose, titanium dioxide, talc, docusate sodium, indigo carmine)

Read the full Patient Information Leaflet supplied in the pack before you start treatment. It covers who shouldn't take Propecia (including all women), the handling precautions around broken tablets, and what to do if you or a partner may be pregnant. If your pack doesn't include one, ask your pharmacist or message us and we'll send a copy.
